Lyric Winds
![]() Dr. Kimberly Batchelder Helton is the Instructor of Flute at Simpson College. She has performed and presented master classes internationally as well as throughout the Midwest. She was also a recipient of the prestigious University of Iowa performance fellowship and has taught Flute at Grinnell College and Drake University. Dr. Helton received a Bachelor of Music from Brigham Young University, a Master of Music from Drake University, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa. She is piccoloist/
third flutist with Orchestra Iowa, piccoloist with the Des Moines Metro Opera, and a member of the Polaris Wind Quintet. Susan Odem received a Bachelor of Music in oboe from the University of Missouri - Kansas City and a Master of Music from Drake University. She is a member of the Des Moines Symphony, the Des Moines Symphony Woodwind Quintet, the Bruch Trio, and the Amadeus Trio. Ms. Odem is an adjunct instructor of double reeds at Simpson College and Central College, and teaches a large private studio of double reed students. Kariann Voigts is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa in Music Education and Performance. She taught public school instrumental music in Iowa for three years before pursuing her Master of Music in clarinet performance from Indiana University. Upon completion of her degree in 1988, she joined The United States Air Force Band of the Rockies in Colorado Springs, one of the two premiere musical units of the Air Force. For her distinguished service with the band, Ms. Voigts was a recipient of the United State Air Force Commendation Medal. Kariann's professional orchestral playing experience includes the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, the Dubuque Symphony, Orchestra Iowa, and most recently, the Des Moines Symphony. In addition to teaching clarinet at Simpson College, Ms. Voigts has maintained a private woodwind teaching studio throughout her career with an emphasis on clarinet. |
